Cash had never been inside a prison when he wrote the song in 1953, and spent thirteen years asking his label to let him play one. On January 13, 1968 he played two shows for the men here, opened with Folsom Prison Blues, and the live album put him back on top of country music at a point when his career was widely considered finished. The roar that follows the line about shooting a man in Reno was added later in the studio: the prisoners had stayed quiet, wary of what cheering it in front of the guards would cost them.
