Lawrence Welk leaves the farm with an accordion
1924
Strasburg, North Dakota
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Born in a sod house to Germans from Russia and speaking no English until he was in his twenties, Welk talked his father into a mail-order accordion by promising four more years of farm labour and every dollar he earned playing. He left on his twenty-first birthday and ended up with the longest-running variety show in American television.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
