A garden cemetery laid out in 1869 on the ridge above the city, and the burial ground of John D. Rockefeller under a 70 foot obelisk, President James A. Garfield inside a stone tower, Eliot Ness, and Carl Stokes, the first Black mayor of a major American city. The monument work pulled in Italian stonecutters who settled at the foot of the hill and made Little Italy. Building all that stone at once went too fast and nearly bankrupted the cemetery in 1888.
