La Salle at the St. Joseph portage
1681
South Bend, Indiana
The bend in the river is the point where a canoe coming up the St. Joseph is closest to the Kankakee and the Mississippi beyond it, a few miles of carrying between two halves of the continent. La Salle used the portage and met Miami and Illinois leaders under an oak here to argue for a common front against the Iroquois. The city grew on the crossing, not the river.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
