Kobuta, a town named after synthetic rubber
1942
Potter Township, Pennsylvania
The name is Koppers plus butadiene. After Japan took the Pacific rubber plantations the government built a plant here in 1942 to make styrene and butadiene, the two ingredients of Buna S, under the crash national programme to replace natural rubber. More than twenty thousand people worked on the construction and 7,375 were on site at the July 1943 peak. Koppers bought the finished plant back from the government in 1946 for one dollar.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
