Kettering High, built for autoworkers' children and closed in 2012
1965
Gratiot Town, Detroit
Detroit put this school up for the children of east side factory workers and named it after Charles Kettering, who ran research at General Motors for 27 years and gave cars the electric starter. Clearance for it started in 1961, but strikes and money trouble held the opening to 1965, and the first classes met in the gym because the furniture had not arrived. Students cast a concrete letter K fourteen feet tall and weighing fifteen tons and stood it outside. The district closed the school in 2012, about 1,200 seats short of full.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
