Two deserts meet here, high Mojave with the yuccas Mormon travellers named for a praying prophet, low Colorado with cactus and ocotillo. Minerva Hoyt campaigned it into a monument in 1936 after watching Los Angeles gardeners strip the desert for landscaping.
