1906
Mill Creek Valley, St. Louis, Missouri

Born into the Mill Creek Valley slums, out working as a domestic at eight, married and divorced twice before she was sixteen, and gone to New York and then Paris where she became the most famous American performer in Europe. She saw the East St. Louis riot as a child and said it never left her. She came back in 1963 to speak at the March on Washington in her Free French uniform.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
