The Miami fronton opened in 1926 and made a Basque handball game, played with a wicker cesta that slings the ball at 180 miles an hour, into a Florida institution with valet parking and pari-mutuel windows. At its 1970s peak thousands came nightly. The crowds are mostly gone but the fronton still runs, the oldest in the country, and the ball is still the fastest in sport.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
