In 1881 Iroquois became the first American-bred horse to win England's Epsom Derby, ridden by Fred Archer, then England's champion jockey. Five years later Confederate general William Hicks Jackson bought the champion and brought him home to stand at stud on the Belle Meade Plantation outside Nashville, where he sired generations of American thoroughbreds and turned the farm's 1887 yearling sale into a 4,000-guest sensation.
