Hyperion pumps sludge into Santa Monica Bay for thirty years

Los Angeles opened the Hyperion plant beside Dockweiler Beach in 1950 with full secondary treatment. By 1957 its engineers had scaled that back and begun discharging digested sludge through a pipe seven miles out into Santa Monica Bay, on the order of 25 million pounds a month. After three decades of it, samples from the seabed at the outfall turned up almost nothing living except worms and one hardy clam. The sludge discharge ended in 1987 and the solids now go to a farm in Kern County.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
