Hupmobile, the Detroit car built on an 8,500 dollar stake
1909
Detroit, Michigan
Robert Craig Hupp and Charles Hastings, who had come over from Oldsmobile, started the Hupp Motor Car Company in 1909 on an initial 8,500 dollars Hastings put in. The Hupmobile sold hard against Ford and Chevrolet and the company was still moving more than 65,000 cars in 1928. Hupp died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the Detroit Athletic Club in 1931 after a game of squash. The firm later bought the body dies for the Cord 810, could not afford to build the car on its own, and the Hupmobile line ended in 1939.
