French Protestant refugees who had fled to the Rhineland and then across the Atlantic bought land from the Esopus and built in local limestone with walls two feet thick. Seven of the original stone houses still stand on one street, several occupied by descendants of the builders into the twentieth century, the oldest intact street of its kind in the country.
