How St. Louis became the chess capital
2008
4652 Maryland Avenue, Central West End, St. Louis
A retired investor who grew up in a St. Louis orphanage put his money into a chess club in the Central West End in 2008, and within a few years the US Championship, a Hall of Fame and one of the strongest annual tournaments in the world had all moved here. Congress has twice named the city the chess capital of the country. There is a fourteen foot king on the pavement outside, which held a world record for a while.
