Thomas Frist Sr., his son Thomas Frist Jr., and the businessman Jack Massey founded Hospital Corporation of America in 1968, folding Frist Sr.'s own Park View Hospital into a company built to run hospitals the way a chain runs stores rather than as individual charities. It was one of the first for-profit hospital corporations in the country, and the model worked: by 1979 HCA owned or managed 140 hospitals. Its success turned Nashville into the country's hub for healthcare management, an industry still headquartered a few blocks from the state capitol.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
