Hopson brings in the first all-machine cotton crop
1944
Coahoma County, Mississippi
International Harvester's mechanical pickers planted, chopped and harvested a cotton crop here without a human hand touching it, one machine doing the work of fifty people at about a twentieth of the cost. It is the single largest reason the Delta emptied: within twenty years sharecropping was finished and several hundred thousand people had gone north. The blues went with them.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
