Hope Cemetery, carved by its residents

Barre called itself the granite capital of the world, and the Italian stonecutters who worked the quarries carved their own memorials: a granite soccer ball, a race car, an armchair, a husband and wife holding hands across two stones, a full-size bed. Many of the carvers died young of silicosis from the sheds, and knew it, which is why the work is signed and unsparing. The cemetery is the town's masterpiece and its argument.
