Decatur Cemetery, older than the town around it

The oldest publicly owned burial ground in metro Atlanta, in use before Decatur was incorporated in 1823. The earliest written record is an 1832 act of the legislature appointing commissioners for the Decatur Burial Ground. Its present look comes from an 1881 landscaping plan that added a well house, iron fencing and Stone Mountain granite detail. It now runs to 58 acres and more than 20,000 graves, with the nineteenth century burials and the historic African American section in one seven-acre corner.
