Homestead Army Airfield opens, dies in a hurricane, and comes back

The field opened in September 1942 as an Air Transport Command ferrying stop, moving aircraft out of the country. On 15 September 1945, three years to the day after it was founded, a hurricane put 145 mile an hour winds through the buildings, and the Army announced the base would close by that December. It came back in 1955 as a Strategic Air Command installation and was a front line field during the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of it in 1992 and it was rebuilt as a reserve base.
