A Creole shoemaker light enough to pass boarded a whites-only carriage by prior arrangement with the railway and a committee of Black New Orleanians, so the law could be tested. Plessy v. Ferguson gave the country separate but equal for 58 years. Louisiana pardoned him in 2022.
