Johnny Heinold opened this waterfront bar in 1883 in a shack put together from salvaged ship timber, and it has been leaning downhill ever since. The name describes its position on the estuary: for a sailor it was the first drink after a voyage and the last one before shipping out. Jack London did his reading at its tables as a boy and later worked the place and its regulars into The Call of the Wild and The Sea Wolf.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
