Hefner's first Playboy resort
1968
Grand Geneva, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin
Public Domain · Wikimedia Commons
Hefner put the first Playboy resort out here in 1968, an hour and a half from Chicago, with bunnies, a ski hill and two golf courses, and for a decade it was where the magazine's idea of itself went on holiday. It closed in 1981, became the Americana the following year and the Grand Geneva in 1993, and the buildings are still standing and still a resort. Lake Geneva had been Chicago's escape valve since 1871, when the people whose houses had just burned down started building summer places on the water.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
