George Dolton's ferry across the Little Calumet
1836
Dolton, Illinois

George Dolton settled in 1835 where an old trail crossed the Little Calumet River and started a ferry the following year with J. C. Matthews. A toll bridge replaced it in 1842 and ran until 1856. Dolton and his sons were abolitionists and the crossing carried people escaping slavery north toward Chicago. Dolton and Riverdale were one community in practice until each incorporated as a village in 1892.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
