Born in Madison in 1930 and a student at the university here from 1947 to 1950, before New York and before John Cassavetes, with whom she made ten films that largely invented what American independent acting looks like. A Woman Under the Influence and Gloria both got her Oscar nominations. Her son directed her in The Notebook at the other end of a career that ran nearly seventy years. A New Yorker critic called her the most important and original screen actor of the past half century.
