Gatorade, invented for the Gators
1965

A University of Florida kidney specialist named Robert Cade mixed water, salt, sugar and lemon juice in 1965 to answer a football coach's question about why his players never needed to urinate. The Gators started winning second halves, the 1967 Orange Bowl made it famous, and the sports-drink industry existed. Royalties have paid the university hundreds of millions, and the losing team in that first legal fight was the athletic department, which had called the project a waste.
