The landfill had closed months earlier when it was reopened to receive the ruins of the towers. About 1.4 million tons came here by barge, and for ten months detectives, firefighters and sanitation workers picked through it around the clock for remains, identification and evidence. The mounds are now being capped and planted as Freshkills Park, which at 2,200 acres will be the largest park built in the city since the nineteenth century.
