Fred Smith's Concrete Park
1948
Phillips, Wisconsin
Sculpture created by Fred Smith. Copyright held by Friends o · CC BY-SA 3.0 · Wikimedia Commons
Retired lumberjack Fred Smith started building concrete people in his yard outside Phillips in 1948, studding them with beer bottle glass from the tavern next door, and did not stop until a stroke sixteen years and 237 sculptures later: loggers, farmers, Ben Hur's chariot team, a beer wagon with real wagon wheels. He had never made art before sixty three. The county keeps the whole population standing in the pines where he left them.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
