Fort Hancock and the Proving Ground
1874

The Army tested nearly every gun it bought on this spit of sand for decades, the country's first proving ground, firing out to sea from a fort built to guard the approach to New York, later ringed with Nike missiles pointed up at Soviet bombers. It is a ghost post now, a mile of empty officers' houses on Officers' Row facing the bay, slowly falling down inside a national park.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
