Sterling Price brought twelve thousand men into the Arcadia Valley in September 1864 meaning to take St. Louis, and threw them at a hexagonal earthwork held by about a thousand under Thomas Ewing. The attacks failed badly enough to cost Price more than a day and perhaps a thousand casualties. Ewing then walked his garrison out through the lines in the dark and blew the powder magazine behind him, and the crater it left is still the middle of the fort.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
