Fannie Lou Hamer registers to vote
1962
Ruleville, Mississippi
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The youngest of twenty children and a plantation timekeeper for eighteen years, Hamer tried to register and was thrown off the place the same day. She had already been sterilised without consent during unrelated surgery, common enough in the state to be called a Mississippi appendectomy. In 1964 she testified on television about being beaten in a Winona jail, and Johnson called a press conference to get her off the air.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
