Twelve thousand Mexican American shellers, mostly women earning about two cents a pound, walked out under Emma Tenayuca, a 21-year-old organiser the police arrested repeatedly and tear-gassed. They won a raise. The industry then mechanised and eliminated most of the jobs, and Tenayuca was driven out of Texas for years.
