The West Park Commission laid out its southernmost park in 1869 and named it for Senator Stephen A. Douglas, with William Le Baron Jenney drawing the plans for the whole West Side system two years later. In 2020 the Chicago Park District board voted first to take Douglas off it, then to rename the 173 acres for Frederick Douglass and his wife Anna Murray Douglass. The sign changed by one letter.
