Eighty-seven people took an untested shortcut, lost three weeks in the Wasatch and the Great Salt Lake Desert, and reached the Sierra as the snow closed the pass. Forty-eight survived the winter, some by eating the dead. The railroad later drove its summit tunnels through the same granite.
