Dolly Sods Wilderness, Tucker County, West Virginia

A high plateau that looks like Labrador dropped into the mid-Atlantic, with sphagnum bog, wind-flagged spruce and heath that belongs six hundred miles north. It got that way by being logged to the rock and burned, and then the Army used it as a live artillery range in the Second World War. Shells still come up. The signs at the trailhead ask you not to touch anything metal.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
