Verplanck Colvin spent nearly thirty years measuring a range nobody had properly mapped, hauling theodolites up trailless peaks and inventing equipment when none existed. He found the highest pond on Marcy's shoulder and named it Lake Tear of the Clouds, the source of the Hudson. His reports argued the forest had to be protected as a watershed, and are the reason the park exists.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
