This ground was part of Bladensburg until it incorporated on its own in 1927. The name splices the first syllable of Columbia onto Maryland, which puts it in a small family of American border towns built the same way, alongside Delmar, Marydel and Pennmar. The creek bottom inside its limits is the old Bladensburg duelling ground, used because it lay just outside the District line where duelling was banned.
