Cobblestone Farm and the masonry style that walked west from New York

Benajah Ticknor was a US Navy surgeon from Connecticut whose brother bought him this farm, and in 1844 a mason laid up its walls in courses of cobblestones set in a herringbone pattern. The technique started in western New York in the 1830s and travelled with the settlers, taught mason to mason, and most who learned it built only three or four houses in a lifetime. It is one of the best surviving examples in Michigan. Ann Arbor bought the farm in 1973 and runs it as a museum of 1840s farm life.
