Clermont, the Livingstons and the steamboat

Robert Livingston administered the oath to Washington, helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase, and then put money into Robert Fulton's steamboat on the condition it be named for this house. It ran New York to Albany in thirty-two hours against wind and tide in 1807, and the monopoly the pair were granted on Hudson steam traffic ended in the Supreme Court case that defined federal power over interstate commerce.
