The Puyallup Tribe's school opened here in 1996 and is the largest affiliated with the Bureau of Indian Education, built as a model for what tribal schooling could look like after the boarding school era. It carries the name of the Nisqually leader hanged at Steilacoom in 1858 for killing a soldier during a war. On 10 December 2004 a special court of seven current and former state supreme court justices held that Leschi was a lawful combatant and should never have been tried for murder.
