Cherry Springs, the darkest sky in the East
2000
Coudersport, Potter County, Pennsylvania

A mountaintop field in Potter County so far from anything that the Milky Way casts a shadow on clear moonless nights, certified as the first International Dark Sky Park east of the Mississippi. Astronomers book the overnight field and dawn is enforced by etiquette: red flashlights only, headlights are a misdemeanor of the soul. The county calls itself God's Country and at 2 am the sky argues the case.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
