Chavez jailed in Salinas
1970
Salinas, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
He refused a judge's order to call off a lettuce boycott and was held in the county jail for twenty days. Coretta Scott King came to visit him, and so did Ethel Kennedy, and the crowds outside knelt in the road. The California Supreme Court eventually let him out. The grape fight had just been won. The lettuce fight ran for another decade.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
