Charlie Russell paints the open range
1880
Great Falls, Montana
A St. Louis boy who came west at sixteen, wrangled horses for eleven years and painted what he had actually seen. He learned Plains sign language, lived among the Blood, and his work is the closest thing to an eyewitness record of the open range before it was fenced.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
