Cambridge City Hall, paid for by a hometown fortune
1889

The city built its hall in 1888 and 1889 with money largely donated by Frederick Hastings Rindge, a Cambridge native who had inherited a fortune. Longfellow, Alden and Harlow designed it in the Richardsonian Romanesque style that dominated Boston building at the time. It anchors the City Hall Historic District, next door to Central Square.
