Cahuenga Peak, the 138 acres behind the Hollywood Sign that almost became houses

Howard Hughes bought this ridge just west of the Hollywood Sign in 1940 and meant to build a house on it for Ginger Rogers. Nothing was ever built, and in 2002 his estate sold the 138 acres to an investment firm for 1.6 million dollars, which later put it back on the market as development land. The Trust for Public Land spent a year raising the 12.5 million dollars to buy it, with a million each from the Tiffany and Company Foundation and Aileen Getty, and Hugh Hefner closing the last gap in April 2010 with 900,000 dollars. The land became part of Griffith Park that year, and the peak is the highest ground in the park.
