Delegates from 44 nations spent three weeks of July 1944 in a grand railroad hotel in the White Mountains and came out having invented the postwar economy: the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and a system with the U.S. Dollar at the center of it. The hotel trades happily on the ghosts. The gold-standard era that started here lasted until 1971.
