Ten six storey buildings holding 960 apartments opened in Woodside in June 1935, built with a federal loan of 3,450,000 dollars from the Public Works Administration and designed by Theodore H. Englehardt for the Cord Meyer Development Corporation. Rent averaged eleven dollars a room, the buildings cover only 22 per cent of the land, and the rest is courtyards and playgrounds. Every unit was leased by that September and the waiting list ran to 5,000 families a year later. It was one of seven developments the PWA funded through private companies before the programme was confined to public housing authorities.
