Boalsburg and Memorial Day
1864
Boalsburg, Pennsylvania

Three women decorated soldiers' graves here in October 1864, and Boalsburg has claimed the birth of Memorial Day ever since, a claim contested by two dozen towns and settled by Congress in favor of Waterloo, New York, which Boalsburg regards as a clerical error. The stone village throws the argument a festival every May. Its other export was Theodore Boal's private machine-gun troop, but one legend per town.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
