Birdtown, the company neighbourhood National Carbon built for its Slovak workers

The National Carbon Company set up at Madison Avenue and West 117th Street in 1891 and then bought the farmland behind it so its workers could walk to the plant. The streets were named Thrush, Lark, Robin, Quail and Plover, which is where the neighbourhood got its name. By 1910 Slovaks made up about seventy percent of the residents, in duplexes and back-lot rentals packed tight enough to house several families on one parcel. The district is on the National Register.
