The widow who had run Chicago society and the Woman's Building at the 1893 fair came to Florida at sixty-one, bought about a quarter of what is now Sarasota County, and set about proving it could be farmed. She dipped cattle for ticks, drained wetland, planted citrus and celery, and ran it herself until she died in 1918. Sarasota's modern existence is largely her doing, and the same woman had commissioned the Palmer House brownie.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
