Berry's Creek, the most mercury-poisoned freshwater sediment on earth
1984
Berry's Creek, Meadowlands, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A mercury processing plant at Wood-Ridge ran from 1929 to 1974 on the bank of this Hackensack tributary, and the methyl mercury that settled into the creek bed measures higher than any other freshwater sediment recorded anywhere in the world. The Ventron and Velsicol site went on the Superfund national priorities list in September 1984 and the dredging and capping is still going on. Herons and egrets feed in the same channels.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
